      What would you recommend for long range offshore comms?

        But seriously what do define as long range? For coastal use, just about any VHF will do.

          What is range of vhf? I thought 25-30 miles is that sufficient/ correct?

            Many factors affect range including quality of the radio and antenna, height of antenna, terrain (VHF is line of sight).

            That said it is the standard device to carry on a boat (along with a cell phone). SSB and ham might be carried offshore but I think more commonly it would be a sat phone or communicator like an InReach these days
